In the wake of the disclosure of the National Security Agency’s mass digital surveillance program, a group of Austrian students have filed a series of formal complaints with a number of European data protection agencies. The case could become the first legal proceeding challenging disclosure of non-American data to the American government on the basis of alleged violations of European Union data protection law.
The students filing the complaints are all members of an advocacy organization called "Europe vs. Facebook," which for over two years has been encouraging Facebook users worldwide to request copies of whatever data Facebook holds on each of them. Ars profiled this effort, and its leader, Max Schrems, in December 2012.
“[The goal of this effort] is to see if it is legal for a European Union company to forward data to the National Security Agency in bulk,” Schrems told Ars. “[and] to get more information, because they will have to disclose stuff in a preceding here. The US gag orders are not valid here. Both might be another puzzle piece for the good of mankind.”
Under European Union law, Facebook is required to comply with user data requests within 40 days, since its international (e.g., non-American) headquarters are in Ireland (largely for tax reasons). This means that all Facebook users outside the United States and Canada (which have their own, less-stringent privacy rules) are effectively governed by Irish and EU data protection authorities.
Schrems and his colleagues now are hoping to use European law to find out what has been done with their data held by various digital services, including Facebook (PDF), Apple (PDF), Microsoft (PDF),Skype (PDF), and Yahoo (PDF), all of which were reported to have complied to some degree with theNSA’s PRISM surveillance program. These formal complaints (PDF) were filed with the relevant data protection authorities (DPA) in Ireland, Luxembourg, and Germany on Wednesday.
Its not so much I do not like surveillance, by the way I do if it is illegal and on mass. Also if it is illegal according to Irish /EU law.

Significance
- Yantras are the Hindu version of Buddhist mandalas and typically consist of symbols or patterns contained within an enclosing geometric shape.

Say it quietly, but the first part of maligned doctor Andrew Wakefield’s theory about the MMR vaccine and autism has been proved right this week. Researchers have discovered that autistic children have low levels of three critical bacteria in their gut—so if it can be established that gut flora is affected by the vaccine, as Wakefield has suggested, medicine owes him one big apology.
Doctors know that autistic children usually have a range of gut problems, so researchers from the Arizona State University decided to find out if it was more than coincidence. They analysed the gut flora of 20 autistic children aged between three and 16 years and compared them to samples from 20 healthy children. The autistic children had fewer types of gut bacteria, and they were also low in three critical varieties: Prevotella, Coprococcus and Veillonellaceae. Of these, Prevotella is the most important as it plays a vital role in gut interaction.

Panama: Cuba 'Owns' North Korean Ship Arms
Cuba has claimed it owns the arms that were found on board a North Korean ship that Panama has impounded.
Panama has called for United Nations investigators to inspect the shipment of missile parts found on the Chong Chon Gang as it tried to enter the Panama Canal last week.
The contraband munitions were hidden under thousands of bags labelled "Cuban Raw Sugar", Panama said.
Cuba claimed ownership in a statement on state television, saying the Soviet-era missile system parts were to be repaired and returned - without mentioning where they were being sent.
Cuba said the shipment contained "obsolete" weaponry "manufactured in the mid-20th century", including anti-aircraft missile arrays, nine disassembled missiles, two MiG-21 Bis jets and 15 engines.
"The agreements Cuba has signed in these areas are based on our need to maintain our defensive capacity to protect national sovereignty," the statement said.
"Cuba reiterates its firm and unwavering commitment with peace, disarmament - including nuclear disarmament - and respect for international law."
Cuba is the only one-party Communist regime in the Americas, and is a rare ally of similarly isolated Pyongyang.
North Korea's army chief of staff General Kyok Sik Kim visited Cuba last month and said the two countries were "in the same trench".
The shipment could constitute a violation of the strict UN arms sanctions imposed on North Korea over its nuclear programme and further sour relations between the US and Cuba.
Panama's security minister Jose Raul Mulino said authorities believe the ship was returning from Havana on its way to North Korea.
He said the affair was now a matter for UN investigators.
"The Security Council will have to send experts," he said.
The US said it strongly supports Panama's actions over the Chong Chon Gang.
"We stand ready to cooperate with Panama should they request our assistance," said US State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell.
The IHS global information company identified the equipment as an RSN-75 Fan Song fire control radar, also known as the SNR-75 Fan Song, for the SA-2 group of surface-to-air (SAM) missiles.
Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli tweeted a photo of the weaponry with the message: "The world needs to sit up and take note: you cannot go around shipping undeclared weapons of war through the Panama Canal."
He said the North Korean captain attempted to kill himself and violence broke out among the 35-strong crew as the ship was raided.
It had been stopped because it was suspected of transporting drugs.
A Panamanian government spokesman said an examination of the ship by weapons specialists may take as long as a week.
Pyongyang has yet to comment on the case.
'Urine could charge mobile phones'

Scientists are claiming a world first in developing a way to charge mobile phones using human urine.
The Bristol-based boffins have been able to charge a Samsung phone by putting urine through a cascade of microbial fuel cells. They have generated enough electricity to send text messages, browse the internet and make a brief phone call.
The scientists now plan to develop the technology to be able to fully charge the handheld device.
The discovery has been made by a team of experts working at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, which is a collaboration between the University of the West of England and the University of Bristol.
Dr Ioannis Ieropoulos, from the University of the West of England, is an expert at harnessing power from unusual sources using microbial fuel cells.
He said: "We are very excited as this is a world first, no-one has harnessed power from urine to do this so it's an exciting discovery. Using the ultimate waste product as a source of power to produce electricity is about as eco as it gets."
The microbial fuel cells act as an energy converter, which turns organic matter directly into electricity, via the metabolism of live microorganisms.
Essentially, the electricity is a by-product of the microbes' natural life cycle, so the more they eat things like urine, the more energy they generate and for longer periods of time.
The electricity output from microbial fuel cells is relatively small and so far the Bristol scientists have only been able to store and accumulate these low levels of energy into capacitors or super-capacitors, for short charge or discharge cycles. It is the first time they have been able to directly charge a mobile phone battery.
The project has been funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Gates Foundation and the Technology Strategy Board. The 'Waste to Real Energy: the first MFC powered mobile phone' article has been published in the journal Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics.
I can see a great future where we are paid to piss for mobile / cells,
after all my pee maybe stronger than yours, and contain more uric acid, and we can harvest it by a bag and urine tube. What about wearing a bag on your butt / bum with a non return valve (cows and horses as well) collect your methane, go home and unload into a specially designed cannister, like in camping, save by your natural waste, actually it is not as crazy as it might first appear.
In India, At Least 22 Children Die After Eating Poisoned School Lunch
A distraught lady crying after the tragedy happens. Also shows how dangerous it is to introduce these chemicals to the food chain. Good old organic farming--not on your life say India Monsanto.
At least 22 children are dead in India after they ate a poisoned school lunch Tuesday at a school in the eastern state of Bihar.
The images are horrific. The AFP reports:
"There were emotional scenes as children, their limbs dangling and heads lolling to one side, were brought to a hospital in the Bihar city of Chhapra.
"Other children, lying listless on stretchers, were placed on intravenous drips amid chaotic scenes at the hospital. Outside, inconsolable relatives wept.
" 'My children had gone to school to study. They came back home crying, and said it hurts,' one distraught father told the NDTV network.
" 'I took them into my arms, but they kept crying, saying their stomach hurt very badly.' "
Perhaps just as heartbreaking: The New York Times reports that after noticing that the children were ill, "the school's teachers and administrators fled the school, according to Dr. Shambhu Nath Singh, the deputy superintendent of the government hospital in Bihar's Saran District."
The Times quotes Singh as saying initial tests revealed that the children's bodies contained a toxic organophosphate commonly found in insecticides.
The Times reports that universal free school lunches were implemented in the country by a 2001 Supreme Court order that concluded it would reduce the level of malnutrition in children. The Times adds:
"In Bihar alone, 20 million children participate in the program, which is administered by state officials.
"Many states provide the food by hiring charities, some of which are linked to powerful politicians. The programs have been credited with improving school attendance, sometimes substantially. And with some surveys suggesting that nearly half of Indian children suffer some form of malnutrition, the programs serve a vital health purpose. But complaints about the quality of the food are common."
IBN reports that following the tragedy, a group of residents rioted. They took to the streets with sticks and smashed the windows of police cars, torched at least one and destroyed a police booth.
The Indian news network reports that the education minister said it is still unclear whether lunches were intentionally poisoned.
The AP reports that 26 other children were hospitalized, 10 of whom were in serious condition. All the children were between the ages of 8 and 11.
Quoting the state's education minister, the BBC says the school's cook, who ate a bit of rice and was in stable condition at the hospital, said she suspected the poisoning was caused by a new type of cooking oil, which looked "discolored and dodgy."
The BBC goes on:
"[The cook] drew it to the attention of the teacher who was in charge of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme at the school and had been transferred there recently - who said the 'oil was home-made and safe to use.'
"The minister said the oil had been bought from the grocery store run by this teacher's husband."
