The first case of a potentially dangerous combination of Covid-19 and the flu has been discovered in a young, pregnant, unvaccinated woman in Israel.

The hybrid condition was diagnosed at Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikva earlier this week, when a woman went into labor.

“She was diagnosed with the flu and coronavirus as soon as she arrived. Both tests came back positive, even after we checked again,” the head of the hospital’s gynecology department, Professor Arnon Vizhnitser said, as quoted by newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, which was the first to report on the double infection case.

He added that the patient had mild symptoms and that influenza and Covid are actually the same disease because both attack the upper respiratory tract. The woman was discharged from the hospital on Thursday.

“We are seeing more and more pregnant women with the flu. It is definitely a great challenge dealing with a woman who comes in with a fever at childbirth and you do not know if it’s coronavirus or the flu, so you refer to them the same. Most of the illness is respiratory,” Vizhnitser said.

According to the outlet, the Health Ministry is assessing the case to find out if a combination of the two viruses can cause more severe illness.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Center for Disease Control has recently reported a sharp increase in flu cases, prompting the Health Ministry to warn that the virus “can cause serious illness such as pneumonia, various respiratory tract infections, myocarditis and even death.” It called upon “all members of the public aged 6 months and older” to get vaccinated for influenza, adding that flu shots can be administered alongside Covid-19 vaccination.

Scientists around the world are assessing the potential risks of combinations of various viruses and variants of Covid. Moderna’s chief medical officer, Paul Burton, warned last month that a combination of the Delta and Omicron Covid-19 variants could create a new, more dangerous strains. (Since vaccinations commenced there have been many, many concerns over menstruation, premature births, still births and men with sperm and prostate troubles, in fact if your read the vaccination warnings of possible symptoms they are mentioned in the pre vaccination sheet.

Bizarre neurological illness plagues young Canadians

Otherwise healthy young adults in New Brunswick are falling ill with crippling symptoms

 

Dozens of young people with no preexisting conditions are developing symptoms of a new disease as activists and families suspect a cover-up on the part of the local government.

A whistleblower with Vitalité Health Network in New Brunswick told The Guardian on Sunday that symptoms include hallucinations, difficulty thinking, limited mobility, insomnia, and rapid weight loss. Local government has reportedly struggled to dismiss the growing number of cases as Alzheimer’s or other neurological diseases uncommon outside the elderly.

While the official number of cases recorded since the mystery illness was first publicly acknowledged in early spring has not budged upward from 48, multiple sources told The Guardian that as many as 150 people may have contracted the fast-moving illness. Still more young people require assessment, and several have died.

Every year if you follow the above statistics the same old narrative is sent out in nearly every country--beds are short, we cannot cope, its a really bad flu season and so on.

However, there is nothing novel about these concerns, as the pressure on the NHS in winter months is a perennial crisis, whose causes have been known but not acted on for many years. The Covid-19 pandemic has merely highlighted them. We know when winter pressures start and when they peak, and that Covid-19 will make dealing with this surge more difficult to manage.

Winter pressures are caused by a near doubling in acute hospital admissions due to respiratory illnesses when compared with the summer. This crisis is compounded by inadequate levels of staff and resources in respiratory departments. This means that, sadly, many of these patients will not be cared for by respiratory specialists, resulting in poorer outcomes.

The British Thoracic Society has warned for many years of the chronic understaffing and underresourcing of respiratory departments, and put forward proposals to rectify them, but these calls have gone unanswered. Just last winter, we reported that more than 70% of respiratory departments didn’t have enough staff to deal with their workload.

We hope that the government will choose to heed the recent report by the health select committee and implement regular reviews of the workforce the NHS really needs, committing to act on their findings. Ministers should also listen to the solutions proposed by those on the NHS frontline, so that winter pressures can become a distant memory.
